From High School Player to College All American - A Success Story

As the owner of 4Goals, I spend my time helping high school athletes in all sports find the college of their dreams. When they find the perfect fit and have the experience of a lifetime, I am so excited and happy for them. I share the following true experience with you to provide an example and the hope that with the right strategy and game plan, you can make that dream come true as well.

Mary Fox, Class of 2007

"From the moment I touched a field hockey stick at age 13, I knew I loved everything about the sport of field hockey and wanted to play in college. But like so many girls who play the sport, I did not start playing field hockey until my freshman year of high school. Before I knew it, I was a junior in high school and behind in the college recruiting process.

So I joined the US Field Hockey Futures Program and attended as many summer camps as possible in the hopes of catching the attention of college coaches. Ultimately, I just could not be at every camp and clinic that my top college choices were attending. I did not lose faith, however, and was determined that my ability and relentlessness would get me to the college of my dreams.

The school I loved the most, the University of Michigan, was not recruiting me. Although I had sent them several letters, the coaches had only seen me play a couple of times, both of which were horrible representations of my level of skill. I knew in my heart that Michigan was the school for me and I set out to show the coaching staff that I had what it takes to be a Wolverine.

I went up to the school on a visit and the coaching staff informed me that if I chose to attend Michigan I would be considered a walk-on but was welcome on the team. That was all I needed. I knew once I got there my work ethic and skill would help me work my way up the ladder. Sure enough, after the first year, I was awarded a scholarship. By the next year I was on a full scholarship and had earned a starting position. This past year I graduated from the University of Michigan as captain of the team and an All-American.

I tell this story because I want high school athletes to know that if you have a passion for your sport, you can play in college. You need to find the college that is the best fit for you, academically and athletically. Whether it is Division I, II, or III, you need the motivation that you belong there, a game plan, and the willingness to do the legwork to get there."
